THE PROJECT LIFE CYCLE PHASES
1.
The objective of project manager and project
team : to carry out the project for the purpose of meeting the project’s
objectives
2. Every project has a beginning, a middle period during which activities move the project toward completion
Project life cycle phase
1.
Conception Phase
2.
Definition phase
3.
Planning and Organizing phase
4.
Implementation Phase
5. Project Clean Up Phase
Conception phase
- Establishing
a need or opportunity for the product, facility or service.
- The project
objective or need is identified : can be business problem or opportunity
- An
appropriate need is documented
- Feasibility
study is conducted to investigate the viability of the ideas
- Once the
recommended solution is approved. A project is initiated to deliver the
approved solution.
6. project is initiated to deliver the
approved solution and
example
1. An operating plant may be having low capacity utilization, high power
consumption and higher cost of production
2. Might be good idea to introduce new technology or replace some items
critically
3. The idea need to be examined in light of objectives and constrains.
4. A well conceived project will go a long way for successful
implementation and operation of project
5. Also possible that ideas may undergo some changes as the project
progresses
DEFINITION PHASE
1. Will develop the idea generated during the conception phase
2. Document describing the project in sufficient details covering all
aspects necessary for the customers /financial institutions
DEFINITION PHASE
1.
Raw materials :qualitatively and quantitative
2.
Plant size /capacity
3.
Location and site
4.
Technology/process selection
5.
Project Layout
6.
Plant and machinery
7.
Electrical and instrumentation
8.
Civil engineering works
9.
Utilities
10. Manpower and organization set up
11. Financial Analysis
12. Implementation schedule
Planning PHASE
1. Where the project solution is further developed in as much as details as
possible
2. Steps necessary to meet the project’s objective
3. Also known as scope management
4. A project plan is created outlining the activities, tasks, dependencies
and time frames
5. Three fundamental components : identification of the work, schedule and
estimation of the cost
Planning and organizing phase
1.
Project infrastructure and enabling services
2.
System design and basic engineering package
3.
Organization and manpower
4.
Schedules and budgets
5.
Licensing and govt clearances
6.
Finance
7.
System and procedure
8.
Identification of project manager
9.
Site preparation and investigation
10. Construction resource and materials
11. Work packaging
Planning and organizing phase
a) Planning : making decision in advance
b) Many of decisions and actions during this phase relate to project basics
c) This phase is part of implementation since it does not limit itself to
paper work and thinking. Field work
Implementation phase
- Project plan is put into motion and work of the
project is performed
- Preparation of
specification for equipment and machinery, ordering an equipment,
lining up construction contractors, issue of construction drawings, civil
construction and construction of equipment
foundation and equipment and machinery.
- 80-85% of the project work is done in this
phase
- All techniques of project management are
applied to this area essentially
- Implementation
phase
- Every attempt is made to fast track—overlapping the various sub phases such as engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning to maximum extent.
Project Clean
up phase
1. Transition phase in which the hardware built with the active involvement
of various agencies---physically handed over for production to a different
agency
2. Drawing.document, files ,operation and maintenance are cataloged and
handing over to the customer
3. The customer has to be satisfied with guarantee test run
4. Planning of the staff and workers involved in execution of the project
5. All project personnel can not suddenly asked to go
6. Project clean up phase
7. The first go---design engineers- few design engineers may be posted at
the residual engineering
8. Their place will be taken by customer’s engineer
Project visibility
1.
A project cannot be seen for most of its life
time
2.
Starts with everything vague and for almost
half of the life span it shows no concrete benefits
3.
Only toward the end of the project seem to be
seeing the project
4.
Accountant wants solid proof before releasing
the payment
